The vocal tract
Hi! Today in my phonetics and phonology class I learned about the vocal tract and the seven main articulators.
The vocal tract
The vocal tract, consisting of the pharynx, oral cavity, and nasal cavity, modifies airflow from the lungs to produce speech.
The seven main articulators
Tongue: The most flexible, active articulator, divided into tip, blade, front, back, and root.
Lips: Used for bilabial ( p, b ,m) and labiodental ( f, v) sounds, or rounded for vowels.
Teeth: Upper teeth act as a passive articulator for dental sounds (th).
Alveolar ridge: The gum ridge directly behind the upper teeth.
Hard palate: The hard, bony roof of the mouth.
Soft palate (Velum): The rear part of the roof of the mouth, which can raise to block the nasal cavity.
Pharynx: The cavity behind the mouth and above the larynx.
